About Luxor

One of Egypt's best known tourist destinations, sun-baked Luxor is awash with historical artefacts. A veritable museum in the open air, the ancient city attracts hundreds of thousands of international tourists each year. As such, there is a good tourist infrastructure to be found here - with hotels in every price range, plenty of organised tours, good restaurants and nightlife and plenty of shops. Sitting on the banks of the River Nile, the city is based around the ancient settlement of Thebes and is famous for iconic sights such as the Karnak Temple - whose sheer size and scale is mind blowing, The Valley of Queens and the Valley of Kings.

The floating restaurants on the Nile, along with the city´s many souk bars, will also leave a lasting impression of Luxor and there are photo opportunities at every step in this history-steeped destination. Donkey and Camel Rides can be taken into the Valley of Kings, where the ancient tombs of kings from the 16th to 11th Century BC lie in an enormous snaking valley. The city itself is thought to have been founded around 3200 BC and the place just oozes history. Busy with visitors all year round, the city should be avoided during July and August by anyone with an aversion to stifling heat and/or pressing crowds. Temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees during these months, while things are a little fresher during the European mid-winter, hovering at around 23 degrees.
